StopNCII.org is a free resource for adults (18 and above) who have experienced non-consensual intimate image (NCII) abuse. The tool generates a hash of your intimate image(s)/video(s). StopNCII.org then shares this hash with participating firms, allowing them to assist in detecting and removing the photos from their web platforms.
The Revenge Porn Helpline (RPH) was formed in 2015 to prevent people from being victims of nonconsensual intimate image abuse. Since its inception, the Revenge Porn Helpline has helped thousands of victims. With a removal rate of more than 90%, they have effectively deleted over 200,000 non-consensual intimate photographs from the Internet.
Who can use StopNCII.org?
- If the photograph is of you and you can access it.
- If the image is intimate in nature (naked or sexual).
- If you are older than 18 in the photograph.
Security and Privacy
When someone is afraid that their personal photographs have been or may be shared to online platforms such as Facebook or Instagram, they can file a case with StopNCII.org to proactively detect them.
The tool uses hash-generating technology to assign a unique hash value (a numerical code) to each image, resulting in a secure digital fingerprint. Tech businesses that participate in StopNCII.org receive the hash and can use it to determine whether someone has shared or is attempting to disseminate the photos on their platforms.
This site is for adults over the age of 18 who believe an intimate photograph of them will be shared, or has already been shared, without their agreement. Other resources and organizations, such as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), can help people under the age of 18.
How does the digital fingerprint work?
A digital fingerprint, also known as a hash, is similar to a barcode that is appended to an image/video when processed using our technology. The hash is subsequently stored in the StopNCII.org bank and sent to partner platforms. The hashes are then compared to each image uploaded to a partner platform, and if they match, the image is removed. The algorithms we employ are PDQ for images and MD5 for movies. They are open-source and the industry standard for apps like ours.
How Does StopNCII.org Work?
StopNCII.org enables those who are threatened with intimate image abuse to generate unique identifiers for their photographs, known as ‘hashes’, without the images ever leaving their device. The hashes are then submitted to the StopNCII.org bank, from whence they are distributed to participating partners.
If you post an image to the platform that matches the corresponding hash, it will be moderated. If it satisfies the standards for an intimate image, it will be withdrawn and blocked from further sharing on any partner platforms. Watch this video to learn more.
Step 1
Select any intimate image(s)/video(s) from your device.
Step 2
StopNCII.org will create a digital fingerprint, or hash, of the image(s)/video(s) on your device. Your device will send a hash rather than the image or video itself. Your content will not be uploaded and will remain on your device.
Step 3
If your case is successfully generated, you will be given a case number that you may use to check the status of your case; keep your case number and PIN handy in case you need to access your case after it is submitted. This is not recoverable.
Step 4
Participating organizations will look for matches to the hash and eliminate any that violate their intimate image abuse policy.
Step 5
StopNCII.org will frequently search for fingerprint matches on partner websites.
Step 6
You may use your case number to check the progress on your case at any time or withdraw it.
