Mercedes-Benz, well-known for its G-Class SUVs, is adding more electric vehicles to its lineup. A smaller version of the standard G-Class is scheduled to go on sale by 2026, in addition to the all-electric EQG variant. Designed by Mercedes’ dedicated G division, the third model in the enlarged G range will be a compact SUV that runs on electricity.
Unique EV Style
In keeping with Mercedes’ dedication to electric mobility, the next smaller G-Class SUV will only run on electricity. The specialised G division will oversee its development, guaranteeing an emphasis on state-of-the-art electric technology and performance.
Confirmation from Mercedes Executives
At CES in Las Vegas, Mercedes’ technical chief Markus Schafer affirmed the SUV’s plans for an electric drivetrain. At the Munich motor show, CEO Ola Kallenius first revealed the model, endearingly calling it the ‘little G’. Gorden Wagener, head of design at Mercedes, promised that the new SUV will have its own unique personality even though it would borrow some design cues from the current G-Class.
Smaller G-Class will not sit on MMA platform
The automaker has unveiled a new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which will be used in a variety of entry-level vehicles in the coming years, beginning with the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. However, Schafer confirmed that the ‘little G’ will be built on a different platform, using modules from Mercedes’ larger rear-wheel-drive vehicles, due to the need for true off-road capability.
This means that the platform will be distinct from, but likely to learn from, the full-sized EQG, which will use a reworked version of the existing ICE G-Class’s ladder-frame chassis and be powered by four electric motors.
Dedicated Off-Roading Platform
The smaller G-Class will ride on a custom platform, in contrast to Mercedes’ entry-level cars, which use Mercedes’ Modular Architecture (MMA). Modules from larger rear-drive vehicles will be incorporated into this platform to maintain the G-Class’s renowned off-road capabilities. On the other hand, the full-sized EQG will have four electric motors and use a modified chassis from the ICE G-Class.
Establishing G as a sub-brand
The introduction of the smaller G-Class does more than just expand the lineup; it also establishes G as a sub-brand within Mercedes. Mercedes’ intention to compete in the tough crossover market and bring the G-Class up to par with renowned sub-brands such as AMG and Maybach is clear from this action. Kallenius emphasised Mercedes’ iconic products and brands, which include the Maybach, AMG, G-Class, S-Class, and SL.
Market presence in India
In India, Mercedes currently offers the standard G-Class SUV, which caters to luxury SUV enthusiasts. Mercedes intends to make a stronger impression in the Indian market by offering customers more options to suit their tastes, beginning with the all-electric EQG and the smaller G-Class.
